I used to think a fire pit was just a hole in the ground

I was at my cousin's place in Bend last weekend and they have this sunken stone pit with built-in seating. The whole area felt like a real room, not just a spot for a fire. They said they dug it about 18 inches down and used local basalt. It totally changed how I see using my own yard. Has anyone built something like that themselves?

Oh man, that sounds awesome. I helped my brother put one in last summer and the digging is no joke, especially if you hit roots. We lined the hole with gravel for drainage before setting the stone. The biggest surprise was how much heat it keeps in when you're sitting down in it. What are you thinking for seating, built-in benches or movable stuff?

We built in stone benches and the heat just stays down there, it's wild.
