Just realized my $12 plastic sprinkler was doing more damage than my $60 brass one ever did
I ran both on my back lawn here in Boise for six weeks straight, same timer schedule, and the cheap one left two brown dead patches about 3 feet wide by the driveway. The brass head spread water way more even and the grass came back thick by week 3. Pulled the plastic one apart and the little gears inside were stripped, so it was basically dumping water in one spot. What really got me was the water bill, $41 more that month on the plastic setup because it ran longer trying to cover the dry spots. If you have a hot stretch coming, check your sprinkler pattern with a few tuna cans before you blame the lawn. Anyone else find a cheap head that actually throws even, or is brass just the way to go?
The cheap vs expensive thing shows up everywhere and it's almost never about the price tag itself. It's about whether the thing was made to do the job right or just made to look like it does. A stripped gear in a $12 sprinkler is the same story as a $20 blender that burns out in a month or a pair of $15 shoes that fall apart by fall. You paid twice for the plastic one, once at the store and again on the water bill, and that second cost is the one nobody counts. Brass costs more up front but it doesn't have hidden fees, which is why the old stuff keeps working while the new stuff gets tossed. That said, I'll still try a cheap head if the reviews are good, I just check the spray pattern first instead of trusting the box.
