My DIY fire pit project ended with a melted trash can

I was building a fire pit in my backyard in Phoenix last Saturday and didn't realize my plastic trash can was sitting 4 feet away. The heat warped the whole side of it and melted a hole through the bottom. Anyone else accidentally melt something while setting up their backyard setup?

wait are we sure that's actually from the heat? i had a plastic bin do that same thing just from sitting in the phoenix sun for a couple days, the bottom just gave out completely. could be the fire pit just finished what the sun already started.

Picked up a cheap resin chair from big lots a few years back and the legs started cracking after one summer. Swapped it out for a metal frame one and it's been sitting in the same spot for three summers now with zero issues. Sometimes the material just can't handle the constant UV and heat combo even without a fire nearby.
