...and I bet what they said actually had some truth to it, even if it stung a little. Most people don't think about how a compost bin can smell if it's not turned enough, you know? I've made that mistake myself. It's not really a bad smell usually, but it can get that weird sour thing going on if you let it get too wet. They probably weren't trying to be rude, just pointing out something you hadn't noticed yet.

Wait, hold up. Are you telling me people actually walk around and smell your compost bin? Like, get up close and take a whiff? That's wild. I thought the whole point of a compost bin was to forget about it in the corner of the yard until you need dirt. I've got one in my backyard and I barely go near it unless I'm dumping coffee grounds. The idea of someone hovering over it and making a comment about the smell is just... next level neighborhood behavior to me.

Damn, people actually sniff your compost bin? That's insane. I'd lose it if a neighbor started critiquing my pile's aroma.
