My neighbor's compost bin made me rethink my whole yard setup

I was out back last Saturday and noticed the Johnsons' bin was just a wire cage with leaves and scraps, nothing fancy. They said they've been doing it for 5 years and never bought fertilizer once. Has anyone else switched to a simple pile instead of those expensive tumblers?

Last spring I built a simple 3-sided bin from pallets I got free at the lumber yard, and it broke down faster than my old tumbler ever did. The key was just flipping it with a pitchfork every couple weeks and keeping it damp, nothing else. Honestly made me wonder why I spent all that money on the fancy stuff before.

Used to buy those expensive tumblers thinking they were the only way, but after seeing their setup I'm convinced simple is better. A wire cage and patience beats plastic gadgets every time, at least from what I've seen.
