My neighbor's perfect lawn made me realize I was overwatering

I mean, I was watering my grass in Phoenix for 20 minutes every morning, thinking it needed it in the heat. But his yard looked way better, and he told me he only does a deep soak twice a week for an hour with his Rain Bird timer. I looked it up, and shallow daily watering just makes weak roots. Anyone else in a dry area figure out a good schedule?

Yeah, that "deep soak" thing is what my landscaper always says.

It makes sense because shallow watering just encourages weak roots. I read an article that said plants get lazy if you only wet the top layer of soil. Getting water way down deep forces them to grow stronger to reach it.

Oh man, same here! I was doing the same thing until my brother, who's a total lawn guy, set me straight. It totally goes with what @margaretc42 said about the deep soak advice. Switching to longer soaks less often made a huge difference. My grass is way tougher now and my water bill is better.
