My new fire pit smoked out the whole block last night
Got one of those solo stove things for my birthday, lit it up for the first time. It said 'smokeless' on the box but my neighbor three houses down texted me asking if my yard was on fire. What's the real trick to keeping these things from smoking?

That smokeless claim only works once the fire gets really hot. The first twenty minutes are always the smokiest, it's just getting up to temp. Maybe your wood was a little damp, or you piled it too high before it caught good. Next time try starting with a small, hot base of kindling and add bigger logs slowly once you see those secondary flames dancing over the holes.

Try burning kiln-dried wood instead.

Honestly, kiln dried wood is way overrated for most people. It costs a ton more and the extra heat you get is pretty small. Tbh, good seasoned wood you've dried yourself burns just fine and saves a lot of money. The whole thing feels like a fix for a problem that doesn't really exist for a normal fireplace. Ngl, it seems like a trend pushed by companies selling expensive wood.
