My uncle insisted I needed a 6-foot fence to keep deer out of my vegetable garden in Asheville, and after three months of watching them jump right over my 4-foot one, I guess he was right.

Has anyone found a cheaper or better looking solution than just building a whole new, taller fence?

Try the fishing line trick. Works for my neighbor too.

My friend Mark in Ohio put up three strands of fishing line last spring after seeing @nancyramirez mention it. He said the deer would run up to his garden, stop short, and then just turn around. It took him about an hour to set up and he hasn't had a single plant eaten since.

My buddy strung fishing line at different heights above his short fence and the deer stopped jumping it. They can't see it well and it spooks them.
