Overheard my neighbor complaining about his sod last Tuesday
I was out watering my flowers and heard my neighbor on the phone, yelling about how his new sod from Home Depot was already half dead after 5 days. He kept saying he watered it every morning for 20 minutes. I have installed sod 6 times for rental properties I manage, so I walked over and asked if he was watering at night instead. Turns out morning watering just cooks the roots in Texas heat and he lost $280 worth of grass. Has anyone else had a similar fail with new sod installs?

Yeah, that "watered it every morning for 20 minutes" part got me. I had a buddy in Phoenix who did the exact same thing with his bermuda grass. He was so proud of himself for getting up early to water, but the sun just fried it by noon. I tried to tell him to switch to evening watering but he said it would cause fungus. Ended up with half dead grass and a bunch of moldy patches anyway. Maybe your neighbor can salvage some of it if he scalps it and starts over with afternoon or evening waterings.

Whoa, so he was watering in the morning during a Texas summer? Did he actually check if the soil was wet underneath or just assume 20 minutes was enough?

Oh man, tell me about it. I did the exact same thing with my first sod install and ended up with crispy grass that looked like straw by day three.
