Pro tip: I picked raised beds over in-ground for my tomatoes and the difference showed up fast
When I moved into my place in Sacramento last spring, I had to decide between digging up the old lawn for an in-ground garden or building raised beds. The soil out back is heavy clay that turns into a brick by July, so I went with raised beds filled with a mix of topsoil and compost instead. Cost me about $180 total for the lumber and dirt, which felt steep at the time. But by week 6, the tomatoes in those beds were almost double the size of the two I stuck in the ground as a test. The in-ground ones got root rot from poor drainage after a big rain in May, while the raised ones just kept going. Has anyone else switched and regretted it, or is raised really the way to go for clay soil?
