Quit Bagging Your Grass Clippings, My Neighbor's Dead Patch in Tulsa Proved It
My neighbor Terry has been bagging every single clipping off his lawn for two summers straight now. I watched him do it again on Saturday, hauling six big black bags to the curb like always. Meanwhile the summer heat in Tulsa hit 102 for a week straight and his yard went brown and crunchy while mine stayed green. Here is what took me too long to figure out. Those clippings break down in about a week and feed the soil, so pulling them off just means you have to buy more fertilizer to replace what you threw away. I stopped bagging three years ago and now I mow twice a week in spring so the pieces stay small enough to disappear. The only time I bag is when I let it grow too long and get clumps, which happens maybe twice a season. Terry spent about $60 on fertilizer in June and his grass still looks worse than mine. Anyone else notice their lawn got easier once they quit hauling clippings to the curb?

Terry's probably dealing with thatch build up from years of clippings piling up, not the clippings themselves being the problem. Two summers of bagging is nothing compared to the 102 degree heat roasting his roots while you're just lucky your soil holds water better.
