Rolled my eyes at my neighbor's rain barrel setup 3 years ago

Now I'm on my second one and my water bill dropped by $15 a month during summer. Anyone else cave and try something you thought was hippie nonsense?

Caved hard when my wife pushed me to get a compost bin last year. I was sure it would just be a stinky mess attracting raccoons. Turned out the garden soil is way better and I barely have any food scraps to toss now. Plus it cut down my trash pickup to every other week which saves like $10 a month. Now I'm the guy who gets excited about banana peels and coffee grounds going in the right bin. What finally got you to try the rain barrel setup?

Ended up getting a rain barrel after our water bill spiked one summer and I finally listened to my neighbor who'd been raving about his for ages. Hooked it up to the downspout and man, the garden plants went nuts from all that untreated water (plus it's free, @kimr91, which honestly beats compost savings by a mile). Now I'm the weirdo doing backyard dances every time it pours.

That line about "untreated water" is exactly why I switched too. The chlorine and stuff in tap water really does mess with soil life over time. My peppers and tomatoes took off after I started using rain water instead of the hose. Plus watching that barrel fill up during a storm feels like free money falling from the sky. Now I'm那个 guy checking weather apps to see when the next good rain is coming.
