Solar string lights died after 2 rainy seasons, tried a cheap fix

Last month my backyard string lights finally gave out after 3 years hung along the fence. The little solar panels were covered in grime and the batteries felt weak. I took them down, cleaned the panels with vinegar water, and swapped in fresh rechargeable AA batteries from the hardware store for about $12. They came back to life brighter than before, so I'm wondering if anyone else has resurrected old solar gear this way or just trashes it.

Those replacements will probably die again once winter hits.
