Update: I picked a simple gravel path over a fancy stone one for my side yard and it saved me about $400.

My neighbor in Phoenix said I was crazy for not using the fancy flagstone, but after three heavy rains, the gravel has drained perfectly and I don't have a single puddle, so has anyone else had to choose between looks and function for a yard project?

Honestly, I was totally on your neighbor's side before. Always thought gravel looked cheap. Then we had that crazy monsoon season last year. Watched my friend's fancy patio turn into a lake every time. My simple gravel driveway? Dry in an hour. Function wins every time for me now. Saved a ton of money and zero headaches. Sometimes the simple fix is just the right one.

Right? It's like paying extra for a headache you didn't even want.

Totally get that shift in thinking. I used to want a perfect poured concrete slab out front too, until I saw how bad they can crack and pool water. Gravel might not win a beauty contest, but watching it just soak up a downpour without a fuss? That's real peace of mind.
