Appreciation post: My $40 bench scraper is now my favorite tool

I always thought a bench scraper was just a fancy piece of metal you didn't need. For years I used a spatula or just my hands to move dough and clean the counter. My wife got me a nice one for my birthday, and I rolled my eyes at first. But after using it for a week, I'm totally converted. It gets under sticky sourdough without tearing it, cleans flour off my granite in one swipe, and I even use it to portion cookie dough perfectly. It's heavy and the blade is super sharp, which makes cutting through foccacia dough a breeze. I feel silly for avoiding it for so long. What's a simple tool you guys love that you almost skipped buying?

You mentioning the microplane grater made me realize something. I see this all the time where the simplest, single-purpose tool ends up being the one you grab for everything. We get sold on these fancy multi-function gadgets, but the real workhorses are the dumb, obvious things like a good scraper or a sharp grater. It's like we overcomplicate stuff trying to be clever, and the basic right answer was sitting there the whole time.

Seriously, my microplane grater was a total game-changer for garlic and ginger.

Right? I used to hate mincing garlic until I got one. It turns ginger into pure paste so fast for stir fry sauce. I even use it for a little lemon zest over pasta now. Total kitchen hero for like ten bucks.
