Burned my third batch of cookies until I found the oven rack trick
I was getting so mad baking chocolate chip cookies because the bottoms would burn but the tops were still raw. This happened like 4 times in a row last month in my apartment in Austin. I tried lowering the temp to 325 but that just made them flat. Then a friend told me to move the rack to the upper third of the oven instead of the middle. I was skeptical but I tried it on a Saturday night and it worked perfectly. The cookies baked even and the bottoms were golden brown instead of black. Has anyone else had this problem with a smaller electric oven or is it just my crappy Whirlpool?

Wait so was the rack in the middle or lower when you were burning the bottoms? Ive got a small electric oven too and I swear it runs hot on the bottom no matter what. I moved my rack to the top third like your friend said and it helped but I still get weird hot spots sometimes. Have you tried rotating the pan halfway through? Thats what finally got mine consistent but its annoying to babysit them. My oven is a Frigidaire not a Whirlpool so maybe its just all small electric ovens acting up.

Oh man, the "babysitting them" part is too real. I feel that. I do rotate the pan halfway through, and it helps a little but not totally. My oven is a GE and I swear the bottom element just has a mind of its own. I actually burned the bottoms on a batch of cookies so bad last week the smoke alarm went off. That was fun. I tried putting a baking sheet on the rack below to deflect some heat, which has worked okay for muffins but not for cookies. Honestly I think these small electric ovens are just cursed.
