My attempt at a fancy birthday cake ended with a fire alarm

Last week I tried making a three layer chocolate cake for my sister's birthday, but the sugar syrup for the frosting boiled over and set off the smoke detector. The whole apartment smelled like burnt sugar for two days. Anyone have tips for keeping syrup from bubbling over?

Saw a video the other day of a guy trying to cook a massive pot of chili and it bubbled over and caught fire on his stove... pretty serious stuff. I guess the worst could be a kitchen fire or burning yourself really bad with hot liquid. Better safe than sorry with a bigger pot and some common sense.
