My chocolate cake in Portland last week looked like a volcano until I stuck a straw in it.
I was rushing the ganache and it set way too fast, so I poked a hole in the center with a straw and poured the rest in to save the layers, has anyone else fixed a cake disaster that way?

That's not fixing a cake, that's performing emergency surgery.

But what if the cake is really worth saving?

Exactly. Some cakes are just too far gone. You end up spending more time and money than if you just started over. It stops being fun and starts being a chore. At a certain point, you have to call it.

I used to be in the "bake another batch" camp until I had a lemon meringue pie collapse on me last summer. The filling was perfect but the meringue slid right off, so I scooped it into a bowl with some toasted coconut and called it a deconstructed mess. That straw trick you did sounds like pure genius honestly, it's way better than tossing a cake you already spent hours on.
