My oven door fell off during a birthday cake bake and I blame the $12 hinge pin
Last Saturday I was baking a 3 layer funfetti cake for my niece's 7th birthday and right when I pulled the pans out to rotate them, the whole oven door dropped onto my foot. The bottom hinge pin had snapped clean in half. I stood there holding a half baked cake in one hand and the door in the other, and I just laughed because of course it happened at the worst time. I tried propping the door back up with a wooden spoon and a rolled up towel, but every time I opened it the door sagged forward and heat poured out. My cake layers came out lopsided and one was raw in the middle, so I had to bake a whole new batch at my neighbor's place down the street. The hinge pin was a $12 part I had swapped in 8 months ago because I was too cheap to buy the $40 OEM set. Turns out you get what you pay for with oven parts, which I should have known after the last one. So now I am shopping for a real replacement and wondering if I should just replace the whole 14 year old oven. Has anyone else had a cheap part wreck a bake at the worst possible moment, and did you fix it or just buy a new one?
