Pro tip: setting a timer on your phone can save a loaf of bread

I was making a sourdough last Saturday and got distracted watching a football game. The loaf ended up baking for like 20 extra minutes because I forgot to set my oven timer. Came out dark brown and hard as a rock, totally ruined. Now I always set two separate timers just in case one doesn't go off. Has anyone else lost a bake to forgetting the timer?

Holy crap, 20 extra minutes? That's brutal. I'd be so mad at myself. I've forgotten timers before but never that long, usually just like 5-10 minutes where the crust gets a little darker than I wanted. Yeah, I double up timers now too. One on my phone and one on the stove clock. Learned that lesson after burning a batch of cookies into charcoal because I was watching Netflix.

Count yourself lucky you only lost cookies. I once left a pot of beans on low heat and went to run errands. Came back six hours later. House smelled like a campfire. The pot was a solid black brick. Took me three days to scrub the bottom of that thing clean. Double timers are for people who don't trust themselves. I say embrace the chaos. Makes you a better cook when you learn to eyeball things. Plus, burned food builds character. My grandma cooked everything by feel and never burned a thing. She'd laugh at us with our phone timers and stove clocks.
