Tried a royal icing transfer sheet last Saturday and it melted into a blob

I spent three hours piping a perfect unicorn design onto parchment, then put it on a warm cake tray and it turned into a puddle. Now I have a green and pink smear that looks like a crime scene. Has anyone else had their transfer sheets fail because of residual heat from the cake?

Right, that unicorn actually sounds like it was beautiful before it melted into a crime scene. I used to think @jamesc79 was being way too extra about the cooling thing but after seeing my own flamingo turn into pink soup I get it now.

Did you let the cake cool completely before putting the sheet on?

Oh wow, @jamesc79, you just blew my mind with that "cool completely" part. I totally skipped that step, I just figured a warm cake would be fine because it's still soft. Now I'm looking at this crumbly mess on my counter and it all makes sense. I mean, I was so impatient to get the icing on there that I didn't even think about how the sheet would just slide right off. I'm honestly shocked that one little thing makes that much of a difference, but I guess I learned my lesson the hard way.
