Update: The bakery in Springfield had a sign that made me question everything
I stopped by a small bakery in Springfield last weekend and saw they had a sign saying 'all cakes made with box mix'. The cakes looked perfect, like magazine photos. But I always thought from-scratch was the only real way to bake. Is a perfect-looking cake from a box a win, or is using a mix an automatic fail no matter how it looks? What do you all think?

Who cares if my last cake looked like a sad pancake?

So what's the actual goal here, a perfect photo or something that tastes amazing? @dylan_ward has the right idea, because a cake that looks like a sad pancake but tastes like heaven is still a total win. If that box mix cake is dry or tastes like chemicals, then the perfect look means nothing. The mix is just a tool, and a lazy baker can mess up a box mix just as easily as from-scratch. Honestly, the only real fail is a cake that nobody wants to eat, no matter how it got made.
