Am I the only one who celebrated hitting 8 clients on my roster?
Last Tuesday I looked at my spreadsheet and saw 8 active clients. I used to think more clients meant more freedom, so I said yes to everyone. By client 5 I was answering Slack at 11pm and eating cold burritos at my desk in Austin. Now with 8 I finally raised my rate and dropped the two who paid late every time. Does anyone else have a magic number where the panic finally backs off?
Man, the cold burrito at the desk thing hit me hard. Been there way too many times, just scarfing something down between calls and wondering why I ever thought this was the dream. Eight sounds about right for a one person shop. Once I got past six or seven I stopped saying yes to every single person who emailed, and weirdly the ones who stuck around were the easy ones who paid on time anyway. Getting rid of the late payers is the real win there, that alone probably bought you back a few hours of sanity every week.
