My "turn off notifications during deep work" trick saved my sanity after 3 weeks of constant pings

I found that setting my phone to Do Not Disturb and using a $5 kitchen timer for 90 minute blocks actually got me to finish a project 2 days early for once, has anyone else tried something dumb simple like that?

I read somewhere that our brains actually process a timer ticking as a subtle pressure cue that keeps you focused. The kitchen timer thing makes total sense to me, it's way harder to cheat a physical clock than your phone.

Not really a pressure cue thing though, more like a boundary - when the timer goes off you're done and can stop feeling guilty about taking a break.

Manual kitchen timer is the only thing that works for me. No excuses.
