Unpopular opinion: taking a whole day off every other Friday did more for my burnout than any planner or morning routine
I know the usual advice is to hustle harder, wake up at 5am, and block your calendar into tiny pieces. I did all of that for about a year. My breaking point came last March when I caught myself crying over a spreadsheet at 11pm on a Tuesday, and I had not taken a full day away from work in almost four months. So I tried something that felt stupid at first. Every other Friday I close the laptop, put the phone in a drawer, and do nothing related to work. No email, no invoices, no "quick check" on anything. The first two times I felt guilty and kept peeking, but by the third Friday something shifted. My Sunday night dread mostly went away, and I stopped snapping at my partner over small stuff. The weird part is my output did not drop at all. I just stopped wasting the first two hours of every morning staring at my inbox feeling tired. I think the whole self care industry wants us buying apps and journals when the real fix is just fewer days at the desk. Has anyone else tried a hard day off that is not the weekend, or does it fall apart for you the way it did for me the first month?
