Heard a younger freelancer talk about 'auto-pay or nothing', made me think about trust
I was at the copy shop last week and this kid, maybe 25, was on the phone telling someone he only works with clients who set up automatic billing from day one. No exceptions. I remember starting out in 2004 and I basically had to wait 60 days for a check to show up in the mail, then pray it didn't bounce. The idea of telling a client 'you must set up auto-pay before I start' would've gotten me laughed out of the room. But honestly, maybe I was too soft back then. I've got one client right now, a small shop in Akron, that pays 45 days late no matter what I send. I've tried friendly reminders, late fees, even a handwritten note. Nothing works. Should I just copy that kid's approach for new clients? Has anyone else had success going strict early on, or does it scare off the good ones?

Weird angle: old clients train young ones on what to expect. Break the cycle.
