Still thinking about that bartender who called me out on my pour

I was at this whiskey bar in Austin last month, sitting at the counter, and I asked for a $30 glass of something aged. The bartender looked at me and said "you don't even like this, you're just showing off." She was right, I was trying to impress someone on a date and she saw right through it. She poured me a $12 rye instead and it was way better. Has anyone else had a stranger just completely read you like that?

Oh I gotta push back on the "she was right" part a tiny bit (sorry, I can't help myself). You said she said you "don't even like this" which is a pretty strong claim about what you're into. Maybe you just didn't know what you liked yet? I've definitely ordered fancy stuff to look cool only to realize it's not my thing, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it at the time. That rye probably was the better call though, those bartenders know their stuff way better than I do when I'm trying to flex.

Fair point about "didn't know what I liked yet." Used to think that way too, but honestly she knew me better than I knew myself at that moment.

Brooke I'm with you completely on that. The whole "you don't even like this" thing is a lot to throw at someone, even if it ends up being true. I had a similar moment at a fancy cocktail bar a few years back. Ordered some super complicated drink with mezcal and smoked salt and all this stuff, really trying to impress the guy I was with. The bartender looked at me and said "you sure? That one's pretty aggressive." I doubled down, got it, and it was basically liquid campfire. So yeah, sometimes you just don't know what you like yet, or you're just trying to be someone you're not for a minute. That bartender was right, but it still stung a little.
