TIL my buddy quit The Wire after 3 episodes and honestly I get it now
Last week my buddy Marcus texted me that he gave up on The Wire after 3 episodes and I gave him so much grief about it over beers on Friday. But then I actually sat down and rewatched those first few episodes and wow, I was being a jerk about it. The pacing is so slow and there are like 12 characters thrown at you with barely any setup, plus half the dialogue is mumbled slang you can't understand without subtitles. I remember watching it for the first time in 2014 with my old roommate Dave and we kept pausing to ask each other what was happening. Everyone online acts like if you don't finish it you're some kind of TV peasant, but a show that only clicks after 8 episodes is asking a lot from people with jobs and kids. I still think it's great, but great is not the same as easy to get into. Has anyone else gone back to a show they trashed and realized the slow start was a real problem?
