Five tries? That's actually insane, most people take way longer to get that right. Damascus steel looks so cool when it's done well but man is it a pain. Seriously impressive you stuck with it through that many attempts.

Right? @dakotag26 gets it, that pattern is so hard to nail. My third try ended up with a weird, blurry line where the layers didn't etch right (I think my acid bath was too cold). The patience is the real skill.

Five tries for a fancy metal sandwich" is honestly the best description of blacksmithing I've ever heard. Sounds like my attempts at making a decent chef's knife... I think I'm on attempt seven now and the last one still had a warp so bad it looked like a banana. My acid bath was probably too hot, ended up with this weird mottled finish that looked like a dog got sick on it. Patience is overrated, I'm just stubborn.
