Had to choose between a coal forge and propane for my first setup in the garage
I was saving up for months and finally had $300 to spend, so I picked a propane forge because I figured it'd be cleaner for indoor use (no smoke in the house garage, you know?). First couple heats on a small knife blade went smooth, no major issues with temperature control. Anyone else start with one fuel type and wish they'd gone the other way?

So was the coal heat more forgiving for hammering out thick steel or just nostalgia talking?

Started with a charcoal forge in my driveway and switched to propane after a year. The propane was way easier to control for smaller pieces like knives and hooks, plus no smoke in my face. But I do miss the feel of working with coal especially for bigger projects like railroad spike stuff. If you're in a garage you made the right call though, propane keeps it simple and clean.

@lilyt23 I think the nostalgia part is real but the coal heat does hold a little longer in thick metal. Still, propane is such a relief for your lungs and eyes.
