He ran a shop in Flagstaff for 22 years and said he lost a whole batch of 8 knives that way back in 2009, so now I'm wondering if anyone here actually gets good results with warm oil on 5160 or if I should just switch to parks 50 and call it done?
That 2009 batch in Flagstaff was probably just too hot going into the oil and not the oil temp itself. If your warm oil is only around 120 to 130F, that's actually helping you more than hurting because it cuts down on the thermal shock that cold oil causes. Parks 50 will for sure give you a faster quench but it's a whole different animal, way more violent, so you'd have to adjust your soak times and watch for warping instead of cracking.
