Spent $300 on a new propane forge burner and it just won't hold a steady heat.

Honestly, I was trying to get a cleaner weld on some Damascus billets, but this thing spikes and drops like crazy no matter how I adjust the regulator. Ngl, it's making my pattern work look all washed out and weak. Anyone know a good fix for a burner that won't stay constant, or did I just buy a lemon?

Ugh, that's the worst. Sounds like your air to fuel mix is totally off. If it's spiking, you're probably getting too much air rushing in, blowing the flame out for a second before it re-lights. Try putting a little collar around the air intake tube, like a piece of sheet metal, to block some of the draft. You can adjust it in and out to find the sweet spot. I had to do that with my first homemade burner, it was all over the place until I got the air choked down a bit.

What brand of burner did you get? I've seen some of the cheaper ones have real issues with the air intake.

It was a cheapo brand from a hardware store, and the air intake was a total mess. The hole was way too big and the adjustment screw was basically useless. I ended up just drilling a new, smaller hole and tapping it for a proper set screw.
