Switching from coal to propane changed my whole shop routine
I ran a coal forge for close to 12 years, and the ritual of banking the fire at the end of the day was almost relaxing. Last spring I switched to a propane forge after a buddy in Toledo offered me his old one for 200 bucks, mainly because my landlord started complaining about the smoke. The difference in heat control is night and day, I can hit a precise temp for spring steel without babysitting the fire. But I still miss the quiet rhythm of tending coal, and I'm wondering if anyone else felt that odd loss when they made the jump. What made you finally change, and did you ever look back?
