That forge demo in Asheville had me scratching my head
Watched a guy at a mountain craft fair try to forge weld two pieces of rebar with a coal forge that was barely glowing red, and he blamed the steel for 20 minutes. The metal never got past dull orange, let alone sparking, and he kept saying the fire was fine because the coke was burning. How do you tell someone their heat is wrong without making a scene in front of a crowd?
... which is exactly how my uncle tried to grill a frozen turkey one Thanksgiving. He kept poking it and insisting the coals were hot enough because there were flames, but there's a big difference between fire and actual heat that transfers into the meat. Some folks just get married to their setup and can't hear that the problem is staring right at them.
