Why does nobody tell you that a $40 chunk of railroad rail beats a $600 anvil for learning to move metal
I picked up a foot long piece of rail off a guy in Ohio for $40 about 3 months back. Left my fancy anvil in the corner and worked that rail instead for 6 weeks straight. The rail has no horn and barely any face, so I had to learn to draw out and upset with just hammer control and heat. After that I went back to the anvil and my hammer blows actually landed where I wanted. The rail taught me way more because I could not cheat with the tools. Has anyone else started on rail or a big block of scrap before spending real money?
