DAE think 'gateway games' are a trap after what happened at my FLGS in Plano
I always pushed back on the idea that light games keep people out of the hobby. Figured Wingspan and Ticket to Ride were the front door and heavy stuff came later.
Then a guy who runs our Thursday group handed me a copy of Food Chain Magnate and I put it off for 4 months because I thought my table wasn't ready. Finally played it in January. Two of my regulars who only ever wanted Catan clones sat through a 3 hour game and asked to run it back the next Thursday.
Turns out I was the one holding us back, not them. I kept feeding us 45 minute fillers because that felt safe.
Has anyone else had a group jump straight into something heavy and never look back? Or did yours burn out on the first long teach?
