Hot take: Letting new players win is ruining casual game nights

I let my sister's boyfriend win at Catan last Friday just to keep the peace and now he thinks he's a strategy genius who argues every rule call. Has anyone else dealt with a sore winner who got their first win handed to them?

My brother threw a Monopoly board at me in 2017 after I "let" him win once.

Did you try setting a house rule that whoever flips the board has to pick up all the little houses and hotels themselves? That usually makes people think twice. But honestly, if they're throwing boards instead of just getting up and walking away, you gotta set a hard boundary before the next game starts. Something like "we take a 5 minute break if anyone's getting frustrated" works way better than trying to manage someone's temper mid-game. I've seen this blow up so many times, the real fix is usually just having a cheap travel version around for the sore losers.

Whoa, I gotta push back a little here. Handing someone a win can definitely backfire, but it sounds like the real problem is just that your sister's boyfriend is insufferable, not the act of letting new players enjoy a game.
