I thought my game group would hate a 4 hour game, but they played it twice in one night
Last Friday, I brought Twilight Imperium to my usual game night. We're a group of six, and we normally stick to stuff under two hours. I was sure they'd groan when I pulled out the box. I even had a backup game ready. But we started at 7 PM, and by 11 PM, after one full game, they all wanted to reset and play again! We finally stopped at 2 AM. I learned that sometimes you just have to go for the big, complex game, because people might surprise you and get totally into it. They loved the negotiation and the big space battles. Has your group ever gotten hooked on a game you thought was too much for them?

Oh man, that's awesome! I mean, Twilight Imperium is a beast though, I'm pretty sure a full game with six people is way longer than four hours. Maybe you guys play super fast or skipped some rules? Still, that's a great story, getting a group to commit like that is the dream.

Yeah, I read somewhere that the average game with new players is more like eight hours. You must have a really focused group!

Hell yeah, that's the best feeling when a group clicks like that. @rosem74 nailed it, but my advice is always have a shorter warm-up game ready on the side, helps ease people into the long haul.
