Oh, that's a great question. A lot of folks forget about the wood itself. If you're painting over bare wood, like a new dresser or trim, you absolutely need to seal it with a primer made for raw wood. Otherwise, the paint can peel or the wood tannins can bleed through and leave yellow stains. I've seen it happen on pine shelves where someone just slapped on regular paint. A good oil-based primer blocks that stain and gives the paint something to stick to.
