My friend told me to skip the rulebook and just watch a video

We were setting up a new game, Root, and he said the rulebook was too much. He said to just find a 20 minute video online instead. I tried it, but halfway through our first game we hit a rule the video never covered. We had to stop and dig through the actual book for like 15 minutes to figure out combat. It totally killed the mood. Now I always at least skim the book first, even if I watch a video too. Does anyone else have a rule for when to use a video versus reading?

Ugh, @wood.jana, did your group ever figure out a better way after that?

My buddy did that with Gloomhaven and we were lost for an hour.

nah but honestly skipping setup is half the fun sometimes. part of the game is figuring it out as you go, even if it means getting lost for an hour. plus then you actually remember the rules better the next time.

Classic board game move. It's like a universal rule that someone always skips the setup part and then everyone pays for it.
