Why does nobody talk about the difference between playing with a strict rules lawyer versus a 'spirit of the game' group?
We tried a full campaign of Gloomhaven with my friend Dave who checks every line, and then again with my sister's crew who just want a fun story, and the second way was way better for us. Has anyone else found their group's vibe makes or breaks a game?

Used to be a real stickler for the written rules myself. Figured playing it right meant following every line. Had a campaign fall apart because of that attitude. Now I see the game is just a tool for having a good time with friends. If bending a rule keeps the story moving and everyone's smiling, that's the better call. The group's mood absolutely decides if a game collects dust or gets played every week.

Gotta ask, is the game really just a tool? That makes it sound like a socket wrench. The rules are what make it a game and not just us telling a story on the couch. If you bend them every time there's a frown, what are you even playing anymore?

Man, that's a solid point. But calling the game just a tool feels a bit off to me. The rules are the frame that holds the whole thing together, you know? If you bend them too much, the game loses its shape and the wins feel cheap. Finding that sweet spot where the rules help the fun instead of kill it is the real trick. How do you decide when to bend a rule without breaking the game?

My old D&D group had a rule zero talk before every new campaign. We basically voted on how strict we wanted to be with the book, and it saved so many arguments later. The key is everyone agreeing on the goal before you even roll dice. If the whole table wants a silly, rule-light story, bending stuff for a good joke works. But if you're all there for a tough, fair challenge, sticking to the written rules keeps it satisfying. It's less about one person deciding and more about what the group signed up for.
