My oxy-acetylene torch decided to quit mid-cut on a 2-inch plate
Was working a job over in Gary last Tuesday on a big boiler retube. Got about halfway through cutting a 2-inch thick tube sheet when my torch just sputtered and died. The cutting tip was glowing but no oxygen pressure. Turned out the regulator O-ring had blown out completely. Had to call my buddy to bring a spare regulator from his truck 45 minutes away. Wasted almost 2 hours of billable time on a part that costs like 3 bucks. Now I always carry a spare O-ring kit in my bag. Anyone else had a small cheap part ruin a whole day?

Ain't it funny how the smallest, cheapest part is always the one that screws up your whole day?

Shane nailed it with that line about cheap parts ruining your day." It's like life has this unwritten rule that whatever costs the least to fix or replace is always the thing that'll cost you the most time and headache. I swear the universe does it on purpose, like it knows a fifteen cent O-ring is way more annoying than something that costs fifty bucks and actually looks like it could break. You patch up your whole rig and check the expensive stuff, but the little cheap piece of rubber is what leaves you standing there with a dead torch and a ticking clock. It's the same with cars, houses, anything really. The tiny stuff nobody thinks about is always waiting to humble you.

Yeah, you're totally right about that but I gotta push back a little on the "universe does it on purpose" thing. It's not cosmic, it's just that cheap parts fail more often because they're made cheap. An O-ring from a dollar store bin is way more likely to crack than one from a proper supplier, even if they look the same. And since they're everywhere and nobody thinks twice about them, of course they're gonna fail when you least expect it. It's not the universe playing tricks, it's just engineering and economics lined up against you. I mean, yeah, it feels personal when you're out in the field and a dime sized piece of rubber kills your whole afternoon, but it's really just math and bad luck doing what they do.
