Preheating with a rosebud torch, thought I had it figured out for 8 years

Found out from a metallurgist at a shutdown in Baton Rouge that I was heating too wide and fast, which was creating cold spots near the weld zone, so now I'm wondering how many of my repairs over the last decade were secretly fighting themselves, has anyone else had a habit they only broke after getting called out by someone who actually studied the science?

That 8 years of habit probably had you fixing problems you never even knew you were making.
