Why does nobody talk about the cost of a good pair of knee pads?

I was working a shutdown at the old paper mill in Kalamazoo and my knees were killing me after two days. I dropped about $80 on a pair of high-end, gel-filled pads on a whim. The difference was immediate, no more sharp pain every time I knelt on grating. That was three years ago and they're still going strong. What other gear have you guys splurged on that actually made the job bearable?

Three years ago I spent $150 on a pair of Red Wing boots for a concrete job and honestly my feet still thank me. I walked through wet mud and rebar all day and they never leaked once. The old pair I had before that cost $40 and I was taping garbage bags around my socks by lunchtime. Sometimes spending a little extra really just saves you the headache later.

Man, you are so right about knee pads. I did the same thing with a pair of insulated Carhartt bibs. I was freezing my tail off on a warehouse job, and dropping the cash on those was a total game changer. Being warm and dry all day just changes your whole outlook.

Exactly, it's not just about comfort, it's about not being miserable for eight hours straight. Good gear lets you focus on the work instead of fighting your own clothes. That mental shift is worth every penny.

Sometimes the cheap stuff just gets the job done though.
