A retired binder told me my glue was too wet and I couldn't argue

I was over at a shop in Portland last fall helping an old timer with his summer project. He watched me glue up a text block and just said, 'Son, you're drowning the spine.' I had been using way too much PVA for years, thinking more meant stronger. He showed me how a thin, even coat actually holds better and doesn't warp the paper. Has anyone else had a simple tweak like that change their whole workflow?

Wait, did you also start adding too much wax to your thread after that?

Honestly, that old timer set me straight too. Ngl, I used to slather glue on like I was buttering toast for a hungry teenager. Tbh, my first few books looked like they'd been caught in a glue rainstorm. Now I barely use any and it's night and day. I still catch myself squeezing out too much sometimes and have to step back and take a deep breath. It's just one of those things where less really is more, even if my brain still wants to go overboard.

Less is more, right?
