Debate: Should we trim book cloth edges before or after gluing? My mentor said after, but a guy at the bindery said before - which side is right?

My teacher always said after, but then again she also glued her fingers to the cover once.

Oh I had a friend in college who swore by that rule too, swore up and down you always put the sticky note on the cover first. Then one time she was in a hurry and just slapped it on the back of the book and when she tried to pull it off later it tore the whole barcode off. She had to explain to the library lady why her book looked all mangled and the lady just stared at her like she was from another planet. Funny thing is I still don't know which way is right, I just flip a coin every time now.

Wait doesn't everyone just stick them wherever fits and hope for the best? I used to be strictly a cover-first person myself, thought that was the only way that made sense. But your teacher's story about the glue fingers actually got me thinking, maybe there isn't one right answer. Now I just grab whatever corner of the book seems quickest and go with it. Honestly the whole thing feels like a personal choice at this point.
