Found a 1912 bookbinding manual at a garage sale in Toledo and one page stopped me cold
Picked up this beat up manual for $3 last weekend and it says a good hand binder could finish 60 books a week back then. I laughed at first, then realized they were doing simple case binds with no rounding, no backing, nothing fancy. Took me 4 hours just to case in one book yesterday because I kept fussing with the headbands. Anyone here ever timed themselves on a basic flat back bind just to see how fast you can really go?
60 books a week is nuts. But yeah I bet those were nothing like what you were doing with the headbands, they were probably cranking out plain flat backs with no fuss. Four hours on one book sounds about right to me though, I'd be right there with you second guessing every fold.
