I was ready to give up on getting clean headbands, but a weird trick with a hair dryer actually worked.

Actually, a low dishwasher temp is way hotter than a washing machine's hot cycle. Most dishwashers heat their own water to like 130-140 minimum, but the drying cycle blasts way hotter air. That extra dry heat is probably what risks melting the elastic, not the wash water itself.

Honestly, that sounds like a great way to melt the elastic or damage the fabric over time. I just throw mine in a mesh laundry bag and wash them on cold with my regular load, they come out fine. Heat seems like an unnecessary risk for something that cleans up with basic soap and water.

My washing machine's hot cycle is 140 degrees. I mean, that's basically the same as a low temp dishwasher setting. If your elastic is melting at that point, maybe the quality is the problem, not the heat. I've been doing it for years and never had a single pair get damaged. They just come out way cleaner and without any leftover smell. Cold water and a bag just doesn't cut it for me.

Yeah I read somewhere that heat can break down the elastic fibers faster.
