Question about a chat with a 74 year old binder in Portland that changed how I fold signatures
I was showing my work at the small press fair in Portland last month and got talking with a retired binder named Ruth who has been at it since 1961. She watched me fold a signature and asked why I was running my bone folder so hard over the crease, then said "paper has a grain, you are fighting it instead of following it." I tried her way on the next batch, barely any pressure and letting the fold fall where the grain wants, and my spines have been sitting flatter than anything I made before. Has anyone else had a folder tell them something simple that just flipped how you work?
