Shoutout to the guy at Renegade Bindery who showed me I was overcomplicating my Japanese stab bindings

I was in Chicago last weekend struggling with a 4-hole binding that kept shifting, and he just said "why not skip the measuring and use your thumb as a guide?" Felt dumb at first but it actually worked way better. Has anyone else ditched their rulers for stuff like this?

Call the ruler police all you want but that thumb trick only works if your hands are the same size as his. Some of us actually need consistent tension across a longer span.

Never thought about it that way but you're totally right. Changed my mind completely.

The ruler trick is fine until you try it with a 6 inch inseam. Then the whole thing falls apart because your thumb is now measuring air. People act like we all knit the same gauge but some of us actually have loose tension and need that extra control across a longer distance. Not every fix works for every hand.
